cumbia de los muertos

29 January 2003

You know how everyone with a chic-enough blog has that “Listening to” bit? Well, we don’t serve that here, honey. If you’re curious though, Peter makes me listen to a whole heck of a lot of Ozomatli.

Speaking of aural delights, Josh made me listen to the world’s most terrifying voice talent right before bed. Oddly enough, it was for what looked to be a perfume commercial. As I told him, it was like listening to the “mild-mannered Freddy Krueger.” Being that I’m currently in a painkiller-laced existence, I had nightmares all night long.

You know what happens when you don’t check your Hotmail account often? J.M. and I get to laugh over a trove of unsolicited e-mails from Internet weirdos—target: me. Here’s a choice snippet for you.

hi elle, how are you ? im river, and i was wondering if we could get to know each other ? i have a feeling you are the kind of person id like to know . tell me about yourself . what do you do ? what is your living situation ? im a doctor of medicine, and have my own private practice. im single, 6ft. 170 lbs, green eyes, and blondish ,brown hair. please write back, and send me a pic or two ! ciao, river.

Subsequent e-mails find him going more into depth about his supposed specialization (pain management), as he’s probably Googling frantically for the answers. If he’s lying through his teeth, he’s in bad shape. He managed to pick out the one girl in the U.S. whose uncle (a real M.D., thank you very much) has an academic interest in the ethics of end-of-life care and successfully argued the case for it with me upon his return from a related Las Vegas conference.

So, yeah. Comedy gold. And would you really want to be treated by a doctor who couldn’t capitalize properly to save his life?

Not too much today; I have to go bake cookies to take to little Zy and Dax this weekend in St. Louis and update a whole bunch of tax calendars for my freelance project. Plus this codeine-withdrawal thing is seriously kicking my ass.
