Sian was lovely enough to send me a recording of her reading some Elizabeth Barrett Browning in her smooth, soothing voice, and that proved to be the inspiration for today’s brief, different entry.
When I was in academy, I was lucky enough to have Dr. Ward lead my AP literature class. One of the lasting treasures he taught to me was a high love of poetry. He encouraged memorization, and once upon that time I had reams and reams of monologues, soliloquies, et al stored in my grey matter. It’s quite unfortunate that years have gone by since then, and I can only recall snatches of Shakespeare or Sophocles now.
Now, when I have a moment, I try and commit another line or two to memory, and I’ve decided to start with the following. It’s one of the more stark, honest poems I’ve come across, and one that resonates through the human psyche.
